Chris Sander

Overview

Chris Sander is a computational biologist and professor of cell biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. He previously served as chair of the Computational Biology Programme at the Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Sander's research focuses on solving biological problems using quantitative methods from bioinformatics, data science, statistics, computer science, and mathematics.

Early Life and Education

Sander received his undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Berlin in 1967. He then studied at the University of California, Berkeley and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen before obtaining his PhD in theoretical physics from the State University of New York in 1975. His thesis was titled "Analytic properties of bound state wave functions."

Career

Sander's transition from theoretical physics to computational biology was influenced by Fred Sanger's landmark 1977 paper in Nature, which published the nucleotide sequence of bacteriophage φX174. Sander has contributed significantly to the field of structural bioinformatics, developing tools such as the Families of Structurally Similar Proteins (FSSP) database and the DSSP algorithm for assigning secondary structure to amino acids.

Sander founded the biocomputing program at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg and later moved it to the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge. He served as chief information officer for Millennium Pharmaceuticals and advised IBM's Deep Computing Initiative, which created the Deep Blue chess computer.

In 2015, Sander relocated his lab to the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute and the Cell Biology Department at Harvard Medical School. He has held editorial positions at the journal "Bioinformatics" and was honoured with the ISCB Accomplishment by a Senior Scientist Award in 2010 and the DeLano Award for Computational Biosciences in 2018.

Research Focus

Sander's research applies computational methods to build predictive network models of molecular and cell-cell interactions, supporting cancer precision medicine and discoveries in structural and evolutionary biology. His lab collaborates closely with clinicians, particularly at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Memorial Sloan Kettering, to apply bioinformatics analysis to cancer genomics. They are also working on evolutionary biology, structural biology, and cell biology problems using statistical physics methods.

Early Life and Education

Chris Sander is a computational biologist and professor in residence of cell biology at Harvard Medical School. He is based at the Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Boston, MA, and is also a special advisor for quantitative biology at the Ludwig Center at Harvard and an associate member of the Broad Institute at Harvard and MIT.

Sander originally trained as a physicist, receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Berlin in 1967. He then studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen before gaining his PhD in theoretical physics from the State University of New York in 1975. His thesis was titled "Analytic properties of bound state wave functions".

Career

Sander moved from theoretical physics to computational biology following Fred Sanger's landmark 1977 paper in Nature, in which the nucleotide sequence of bacteriophage φX174 was published. He has since made significant contributions to the field of structural bioinformatics, including developing tools such as the Families of Structurally Similar Proteins (FSSP) database and the DSSP algorithm, which assigns secondary structure to amino acids.

Sander founded the biocomputing program at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg and later moved the program to the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge, where he served as co-founder. He has also held positions at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where he was chair of the Computational Biology Programme, and at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, where he served as chief information officer. In 2015, he moved his lab to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Cell Biology Department at Harvard Medical School.

Sander has been recognised for his research, receiving the ISCB Accomplishment by a Senior Scientist Award in 2010 and the 2018 DeLano Award for Computational Biosciences. He has also been involved in editorial roles, serving as Executive Editor for the journal Bioinformatics and, in 2014, being appointed one of its first Honorary Editors.

Research Focus

Sander's research focuses on solving biological problems using quantitative methods from various disciplines, including bioinformatics, data science, statistics, computer science, and mathematics. His lab applies computational methods to build predictive network models of molecular and cell-cell interactions, supporting cancer precision medicine and making discoveries in structural and evolutionary biology. They have a particular interest in combining experimental and computational systems biology approaches to identify drug combinations that can overcome drug resistance.

Sander and his team have collaborated with clinicians at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Memorial Sloan Kettering to apply bioinformatics analysis to cancer genomics. They are also working on projects related to evolutionary biology, structural biology, and cell biology, such as generating evolutionarily constrained sequences and developing a quantitative theory linking biopolymer sequences to phenotypic outcomes.
