Colin Scott is a researcher and academic with expertise in microbial biochemistry, synthetic biology, social and cultural anthropology, and indigenous rights. He currently holds the position of Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO, where he has been since 2004.
Scott completed his Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Genetics at the University of Aberystwyth in Wales in 1996. He then went on to the University of Sheffield in England, where he obtained a PhD in Molecular Microbiology in 2000 from the Kreb's Institute.
As a microbial biochemist and synthetic biologist, Scott's research focuses on discovering, engineering, and evolving microbes and proteins. He aims to address significant issues facing Australia and humanity by harnessing the biochemical diversity of microbes. His projects include using microbes and enzymes to clean up pollution, manufacture chemicals, and mine for critical metals. Scott has published in prestigious journals such as Nature and holds multiple patents. Several of his technologies have been commercialised or adopted by the industry.
At CSIRO, Scott has held several senior leadership positions, including director roles in the Synthetic Biology Future Science Platform, the Advanced Engineering Biology Future Science Platform, and the CSIRO BioFoundry.
