Dan Jurafsky
Early Life and Education
Daniel Jurafsky received his B.A. in linguistics in 1983 and a Ph.D. in computer science in 1992, both from the University of California, Berkeley. He then completed a postdoc at the International Computer Science Institute, Berkeley, from 1992 to 1995.
Career and Research
Jurafsky is currently a professor of linguistics and computer science at Stanford University, as well as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a Reynolds Professor in Humanities.
Jurafsky, along with Daniel Gildea, is known for developing the first automatic system for semantic role labeling (SRL) in 2002, which has since become a standard task in natural language processing. He has authored a textbook on speech and language processing with James H. Martin, titled "Speech and Language Processing: An Introduction to Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistics, and Speech Recognition" (2000). The book is currently in its third edition (2023) and is the most widely used text in Natural Language Processing.
Jurafsky has also authored a book titled "The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu" (2014), which was a finalist for the 2015 James Beard Award. The book has been translated into three languages and was a bestseller in Korea.
Jurafsky's recent research includes publications on a range of topics, including:
- The impact of expressions of uncertainty and overconfidence in language models
- Evaluating English influences on fluency in multilingual models
- Using language models to study inductive biases in language learning
- The safety of Large Language Models that follow instructions
- Benchmarking causal interpretability methods on linguistic tasks
- NLP systems and their ability to distinguish between use and mention
- Anthropomorphism in computational linguistics
- Othering and low-status framing of immigrant cuisines in US restaurant reviews and large language models
Awards and Recognition
Jurafsky was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2002 and received the Atkinson Prizes in Psychological and Cognitive Sciences in 2022.
Dan Jurafsky
Early Life and Education
Dan Jurafsky was born in New York and grew up in California. He received his B.A. in Linguistics in 1983 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1992, both from the University of California, Berkeley. Following his Ph.D., Jurafsky completed a postdoc at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley from 1992 to 1995.
Career
Jurafsky is currently a Professor of Linguistics, Professor of Computer Science, and Jackson Eli Reynolds Professor in Humanities at Stanford University. He previously taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder, from 1996 to 2003 before moving to Stanford.
Jurafsky is also an author. He wrote the trade book "The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu" in 2014, which was a finalist for the 2015 James Beard Award. He has also co-authored a textbook, "Speech and Language Processing," with James H. Martin, which is now in its third edition.
Research
Jurafsky's research spans a wide range of topics within natural language processing (NLP) and its applications in the behavioral and social sciences. He is known for developing the first automatic system for semantic role labeling (SRL) with Daniel Gildea in 2002, which has since become a standard task in NLP. He has also co-created the first massively open online course in NLP with Chris Manning.
Some of Jurafsky's recent research includes:
- Anthropomorphism in Language Models: Cheng et al. (2024) propose a computational linguistic measure of anthropomorphism and evaluate large language models on their tendency to anthropomorphize.
- Othering of Immigrant Cuisines: Luo et al. (2024) analyze the use of othering and low-status framing in US restaurant reviews and large language models when discussing immigrant cuisines.
- Model Alignment: Ethayarajh et al. (2024) propose a method for aligning large language models by framing the problem as a prospect-theoretic optimization.
- Causal Interpretability in Language Models: Arora et al. (2024) introduce CausalGym, a benchmark suite for evaluating causal interpretability methods on linguistic tasks.
- Dialect Prejudice in AI Decisions: Hofmann et al. (2024) find that dialect prejudice in AI systems influences decisions about people's character, employability, and criminality.
- Mitigating Stereotypes in Text-to-Image Generation: Bianchi et al. (2023) investigate the amplification of demographic stereotypes in text-to-image generation and propose methods to mitigate this issue.
- Ecosystem-level Analysis of Deployed Machine Learning: Toups et al. (2023) analyze the outcomes of deployed machine learning models across different ecosystems, finding a lack of heterogeneous outcomes.
Awards and Recognition
Jurafsky has received numerous awards and recognition for his contributions to the field. He was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2002 and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a fellow of the Association for Computational Linguistics, the Linguistics Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2022, he received the Atkinson Prizes in Psychological and Cognitive Sciences.
