Dario Amodei (born 1983) is an Italian-American artificial intelligence researcher and entrepreneur. He began his undergraduate studies at Caltech before transferring to Stanford University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in physics. He holds a PhD in physics from Princeton University, awarded in 2011, where he studied the electrophysiology of neural circuits and developed novel devices for intracellular and extracellular recording. Amodei was also a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he worked on applications of mass spectrometry to network models of the cellular proteome and the search for cancer biomarkers.
Amodei has been associated with several prominent companies and institutions throughout his career. He joined Baidu in November 2014 and worked on AI and deep learning projects, including the Deep Speech 2 series for speech recognition. He then became a deep learning researcher on the Google Brain team at Google, where he focused on extending the capabilities of neural networks and authored several papers on AI system safety and accident prevention.
In July 2016, Amodei joined OpenAI, where he initially headed the AI safety team. He later became a Research Director and then Vice President of Research, overseeing projects such as GPT-2 and GPT-3. During his time at OpenAI, he also collaborated with DeepMind to foster positive AI outcomes for people and society. Amodei left OpenAI in December 2020 due to directional differences, particularly regarding OpenAI's ventures with Microsoft.
In 2021, Amodei co-founded Anthropic, an AI safety and research company, with his sister Daniela and other former senior members of OpenAI. He currently serves as the CEO of the company, which aims to ensure that AI does not pose an existential threat to humanity. Anthropic has developed the "Claude-Next" model, a next-gen algorithm for AI self-teaching, and plans to raise significant capital to expand its AI technology and compete with rivals.

Amodei began his career at Baidu, where he worked from November 2014 to October 2015. He then worked at Google as a senior research scientist, serving as a deep learning researcher on the Google Brain team. In 2016, he joined OpenAI, where he helped discover the so-called scaling laws and led the efforts to build GPT-2 and GPT-3. During his time at OpenAI, he served as the vice president of research, setting the overall research direction and leading several teams focused on long-term safety research. In 2021, Amodei co-founded Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) safety and research company, along with his sister Daniela and other former senior members of OpenAI. He currently serves as the CEO of the company, which is known for its large language model series Claude AI.
In 2023, Amodei and his sister Daniela were named as two of the TIME 100 Most Influential People in AI.
Amodei has been a strong advocate for AI safety and has testified before the United States Senate judiciary panel about the dangers of AI, including its potential risks in the development and control of weaponry. He has also urged the US government to stay ahead in AI development, especially when countering China, and has argued for reasonable safeguards to be put in place.
