Standley received a BS in Physics from Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA, in 1993 and a PhD in Chemistry from Columbia University, New York, in 1998.
Standley began his career as a scientific software developer at Schrödinger, Inc., where he worked from 1998 to 2003. During this time, he worked on the PRIME protein structural modelling package and developed the Induced Fit flexible docking protocol.
In 2003, he joined Osaka University as a Senior Researcher at the Protein Data Bank Japan, Institute for Protein Research. From 2006 to 2008, he also held a concurrent position as a Guest Associate Professor at the Center for Advanced Medical Engineering and Informatics, Institute for Protein Research, Osaka University.
In 2008, Standley became a Principal Investigator at the Immunology Frontier Research Center (IFReC) and, after a two-year cross-appointment at Kyoto University's Institute for Virus Research, he became a full-time Professor at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, in 2016.
Standley also directs the Systems Immunology Lab at Osaka University, where he uses computational methods to address complex biological questions and develops software tools for general use.
Standley received the Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Education and Research at Osaka University in 2009.
Standley's research interests include the immune system, immune response, and macrophages. He has authored and co-authored numerous publications in reputed journals, with his most cited works listed below:
