Elizabeth Barnes
Biography
Elizabeth Barnes is an American researcher. There are two notable academics with this name: one is a climate scientist and the other is a philosopher.
Elizabeth A. Barnes, Climate Scientist
Elizabeth A. Barnes is a climate scientist known for her work on understanding the variability of Earth's short- and long-term climate using statistical methods. Her research integrates physics and computer science approaches. She is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and a professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University.
Early Life and Education
Elizabeth A. Barnes grew up in Minnesota. She obtained two bachelor's degrees, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota in mathematics and physics. She then earned a PhD in Atmospheric Science from the University of Washington, specialising in eddy mean flow interactions of the midlatitude jet stream.
After her graduate studies, she took up a post-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University, where she led research on anthropogenic climate change, Arctic amplification, changes to Northern Hemisphere circulation, and extreme events.
Career
In 2013, Barnes joined the faculty of the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University. She has led or co-authored over 115 scholarly journal articles, particularly in the field of climate science. She was an early adopter of machine-learning methods for understanding climate variability and change.
Her research lab has made significant contributions to various topics, including explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) for earth science, subseasonal-to-decadal predictability, climate intervention, climate change and sustainability, large-scale atmospheric dynamics, and causal discovery.

Elizabeth Barnes is an American philosopher specialising in feminist philosophy, metaphysics, social philosophy, and ethics. She is a professor of philosophy at the Corcoran Department of Philosophy, University of Virginia.
Early Life and Education
This Elizabeth Barnes was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina. She obtained a bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Davidson College and a master's degree and PhD from the University of St Andrews, where she studied under Katherine Hawley and Daniel Nolan.
Career
After graduating from St Andrews, Barnes held positions in the philosophy department at the University of Leeds from 2006 before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia in 2014. In 2012, she became the editor-in-chief of the journal Philosophy Compass.
Barnes has published across various fields of philosophy and edited a volume titled "Current Controversies in Metaphysics" in 2015. In 2016, her monograph "The Minority Body" was published, in which she challenges the view of disability in analytic philosophy, arguing that it is primarily a social phenomenon.
