Greg Brockman

Early Life and Education

Greg Brockman is an American entrepreneur, investor, and software developer. Brockman was born in Thompson, North Dakota, and attended Red River High School, where he excelled in mathematics, chemistry, and computer science. In 2006, he won a silver medal in the International Chemistry Olympiad and became the first finalist from North Dakota to participate in the Intel science talent search since 1973.

In 2007, Brockman attended the Canada/USA Mathcamp, a summer program for mathematically talented high-school students. The following year, he enrolled in Harvard University, where he worked with the Harvard Computer Society to administer and build computer systems. However, he left Harvard after a year and briefly enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). During his time at MIT, he maintained projects including XVM, Linerva, and scripts.mit.edu.

Career

In 2010, Brockman dropped out of MIT to join Stripe, Inc., a company founded by his MIT classmate Patrick Collison and his brother, John Collison. He became Stripe's first-ever CTO in 2013 and helped grow the company from 5 to 205 employees (or 4 to 250 employees, according to another source).

In 2015, Brockman left Stripe to co-found OpenAI with Sam Altman and Ilya Sutskever (other sources include Elon Musk as a co-founder). Brockman helped create the OpenAI founding team and led various prominent projects early on, including OpenAI Gym and OpenAI Five, a Dota 2 bot. He served as OpenAI's CTO and, as of 2023, is the company's president and chairman.

On February 14, 2019, OpenAI announced the development of a new large language model called GPT-2, which they kept private due to concerns about potential misuse. On March 14, 2023, Brockman unveiled GPT-4, the newest language model created by OpenAI.

On November 17, 2023, Brockman was removed from OpenAI's board but was told he was vital to the company and would remain in his role. However, he later announced on Twitter that he had quit. Three days later, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Brockman would join Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. The following day, after a deal was reached to reinstate Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI, Brockman returned to the company.
