John F. Healy

Early Life and Education

John F. Healy (c. 1924 – 25 April 2012) was a senior scholar and graduate of [Trinity College, Cambridge]. He attended [Battersea Grammar School and later [Cambridge University], but his studies were interrupted when he was called into military service during [World War II.

Military Service and Career

He served as a Captain in the [Intelligence Corps} of the [British Army] from 1943, stationed in [India] and [Singapore]. After the war, he resumed his studies and earned a [PhD in [Classics and [Archaeology] from [Manchester University] in 1954.

Academic Career

He remained at Manchester University as a literature lecturer and later moved to [Bedford College, London] in 1961 as a Reader in Greek. In 1966, he joined [Royal Holloway College], [University of London], as Professor of Classics. He served as Head of the Department of Classics, Dean of the Faculty of Arts (1978-1981), and Chairman of the Department of Classics (1985-1990). He retired from academia in 1990.

Personal Life

In 1957, he married Carol Ann McEvoy, and their son, John Matthew Healy, was born in 1964. In retirement, Healy and his second wife resided in [Macclesfield], [Cheshire], and he continued lecturing internationally.

John H. Healey (born 1952) is an American cancer surgeon, researcher, and expert in the surgical treatment of benign and malignant bone tumours and musculoskeletal cancers. He is affiliated with the [Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MemorialSloanKetteringCancerCenter) and [Weill Cornell Medical College] in New York.

Education and Training

Healey received a Bachelor of Science in biology from [Yale University} and a Doctor of Medicine from the [University of Vermont College of Medicine]. He completed training in surgery, orthopaedic surgery, and musculoskeletal oncology at various institutions, including the [New England Medical Center Hospital] in Boston and MSKCC in New York.

Research and Clinical Contributions

Healey's research interests include hip reconstruction, orthopaedic reconstructive surgery for metastatic disease, and understanding the molecular biology of bone tumours. He has developed orthopaedic implant devices, such as the Healey Flanged Revision Acetabular Component and the Healey Hip Swivel. He has authored over 250 research articles and book chapters on osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, Paget's disease, and other related topics.

Awards and Leadership

Healey has received awards from the Japanese Orthopaedic Association and Peking University. He has held leadership positions in the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons (past President) and the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation.

John Healy

Biography

John Healy born 1943 is an Irish writer and former tournament chess player. Born in London to Irish immigrant parents, Healy left school at 14 and joined the army, where he had a successful boxing career. After being dishonourably discharged, Healy became homeless and struggled with alcoholism for 15 years. During this time, he learned chess from a fellow inmate while in prison and discovered a natural talent for the game.

Healy quit drinking and, with the help of his former Probation Officer, Clive Soley, began to turn his life around. He became a highly-rated chess player, able to play four games simultaneously while blindfolded. In addition to his chess career, Healy published a book on chess tactics and wrote his autobiography, "The Grass Arena," which won several awards, including the J. R. Ackerley Award for Literary Autobiography.
