Julian Salazar
Julian Salazar is a Senior Research Scientist on the Perception team at Google Research, which he joined in 2023. Previously, he was a Senior Applied Scientist at Amazon AWS AI, where he worked for over five years.
Biography
Salazar lives in San Francisco and graduated from Harvard with an honours degree in Mathematics and a secondary degree in Computer Science. During his time at Harvard, he held summer research fellowships at the University of Chicago and Cambridge, worked as a full-time mobile developer, was a teaching fellow, and held paid internships at J.P. Morgan S&T and HubSpot.
Research
Salazar's research focuses on deep learning for human language, automatic speech recognition (ASR), and natural language processing (NLP). He has contributed to AI cloud services through production-scale language modelling, speech-to-text adaptation, and fast acoustic architectures. His publications include:
- Spoken language generation: Spectron
- Large pretrained language models: Masked LM Scoring, Unsupervised Bitext + NMT, Meta-Learning the Difference
- Non-autoregressive end-to-end ASR: Self-Attention + CTC, Align-Refine
- Low-resource language understanding: Transformers without Tears, Zero-Shot X-lingual Evals, Zero-Shot E2E SLU
- Representation learning for speech audio: BERTphone, DeCoAR
Personal Life
Salazar was born in the Philippines and also has roots in Canada.
