Professor Jürgen Haas

Early Life and Education

Professor Jürgen Haas is a researcher and academic specialising in viral genomics. After completing undergraduate studies in Medicine and Biology, Haas went on to do postdoctoral training at Munich and Harvard University. He then completed medical specialist training in Microbiology at the Universities of Heidelberg and Munich.

Career

Before joining the University of Edinburgh in 2006, Haas was an Associate Professor at the University of Munich. At the University of Edinburgh, he is the Head of Infection Medicine and Professor of Viral Genomics. He is also an honorary NHS consultant virologist at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.

Research

Haas' research focuses on the identification and characterisation of virus-host interactions that are crucial for pathogenesis and affect susceptibility and pathogen virulence. Using genome-wide protein interaction and RNA interference screens, his laboratory has identified key events in the viral life cycle for a range of viruses, including Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1), Food and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV), and high-risk Human Papilloma Virus 16 (HPV-16).
