Katie Mayer is an independent communications specialist based in Scottsdale, Arizona. She has worked in public relations, writing, and editing for clients across a range of industries, including legal, financial, construction, and education. She previously served as the Marketing & Community Outreach Specialist for CASA of Arizona and started her career as a crime reporter. Mayer has also worked in community relations and media relations for the Tempe Police Department and in alumni relations for the Thunderbird School of Global Management.
Mayer holds a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications from Arizona State University. During her studies, she spent a semester abroad in London and focused on Literature and Political Science electives. She also studied Spanish for two years.
Mayer began her career as a public safety reporter from 2005 to 2008, covering public safety issues, contributing to investigative pieces, and breaking news with a focus on crime, government spending, and safety issues. She then transitioned into community affairs, working as a Community Affairs Specialist for the Tempe Police Department from 2008 to 2009, where she engaged and informed community members and the media.
From 2010 to 2012, Mayer served as the Alumni Relations Coordinator for the Thunderbird School of Global Management, connecting alumni with each other and the school and running the Alumni Impact Blog. She then joined Court Appointed Special Advocates of Arizona (CASA) as the Marketing & Community Outreach Specialist from 2012 to 2013, promoting CASA and supporting marketing and outreach efforts across 15 counties in Arizona.
Since 2013, Mayer has worked as an independent communications specialist, providing public relations, writing, and editing services to clients. She has also taught as a guest lecturer at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication, sharing her experiences as a crime reporter and police PIO.
