Mafalda Dias is a researcher in the field of genomics and computational biology. Her work focuses on the intersection of machine learning, genomics, and evolutionary biology. Dias aims to develop new computational strategies to extract information from genomic data to improve diagnosis and preventative care.
Dias is currently a Group Leader at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona. Prior to joining CRG, she held various postdoctoral positions at Harvard Medical School, the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the University of Sussex, and University College London. She received her PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Sussex in 2013.
One of Dias' notable contributions is her work on the Evolutionary model of Variant Effects (EVE). This model aims to predict the propensity of pathogenicity of amino acid variants across human disease genes. She has also developed popEVE, a deep generative model that combines evolutionary information with population sequence data to identify causal mutations associated with genetic diseases.
In the field of protein fitness prediction, Dias introduced Tranception, a novel transformer architecture that leverages autoregressive predictions and retrieval of homologous sequences. Tranception has been shown to achieve state-of-the-art performance in predicting the effects of mutations in proteins.
Additionally, Dias has worked on developing guidelines for releasing variant effect predictors (VEPs) to improve their usability and interpretability in the scientific community. She has also conducted research in theoretical physics and early universe cosmology, developing probabilistic models of inflation from string theory.
