Marius Wiggert is a PhD graduate from the University of California, Berkeley, where he focused on Machine Learning and Robotics. He is currently working with the start-up Phykos, PBC 0 to develop autonomous seaweed farms for gigaton-scale carbon removal.
Marius Wiggert received his PhD in Machine Learning and Robotics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2023. His PhD research focused on developing methods to enable a 1000-fold reduction in power consumption for marine vessels, with a specific application in carbon removal through floating seaweed farms. During his PhD, he also built a research group, raised $350k in grants, collaborated with MIT and industry partners, and published extensively.
Prior to his PhD, Wiggert obtained a Master of Science in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed his undergraduate studies with a focus on physics and math, participating in the International Physics Olympiad in 2012.
Marius Wiggert is currently working as a Tech-Lead at the start-up Phykos, PBC, where he is developing autonomous seaweed farms for carbon removal. He is also involved with Climate Change AI and the World Economic Forum as a Global Shaper.
Wiggert has previously worked as a consultant and research advisor at Creative Destruction Lab, and has held positions at Google X, WorldFund, and McKinsey. He has also taken on roles as a Tech-Lead in two early-stage start-ups and as a Management Consultant.

Marius Wiggert is a Machine Learning and Robotics Researcher affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated with a PhD from Berkeley in 2023, where he was advised by Prof. Claire Tomlin and was part of Berkeley AI Research (BAIR).
Wiggert's research focuses on developing machine learning, robotics, and control techniques to address real-world issues in areas such as climate change mitigation, ocean and agricultural robotics, human-robot interaction, and systems biology.
He is particularly interested in leveraging technology to tackle climate change. His PhD research focused on enabling gigaton-scale carbon removal using floating seaweed farms, for which he received the AI for Climate Security Grant from C3 and Microsoft.
Wiggert leads a joint project between Berkeley and MIT called "Navigating Seaweed Growth Platforms by Leveraging Ocean Currents and Machine Learning." The project aims to develop navigation algorithms for low-power ocean autonomy by "hitchhiking" on ocean currents, requiring significantly less power. These algorithms are now being utilized by the start-up Phykos for their autonomous seaweed farms.
