Ermira "Mira" Murati (born December 16, 1988) is an Albanian engineer, researcher, and tech executive currently serving as the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI. Murati was born and raised in Vlorë, Albania, where she demonstrated a talent for mathematics from a young age, participating in various Olympiads and math competitions throughout her school years.
At age 16, Murati won a scholarship to attend the Pearson United World College of the Pacific in Canada, graduating in 2005. She then pursued a dual-degree program in the United States, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts (AB) in Mathematics from Colby College in 2011, followed by a Bachelor of Engineering from the Thayer School of Engineering in 2012, where she specialized in Mechanical Engineering.
In recognition of her contributions to the field, Dartmouth College awarded Murati an honorary Doctor of Science in 2024.
Murati began her professional career at Zodiac Aerospace before joining Tesla in 2013 as a Product Manager, working on the Model X. She then transitioned to the field of augmented reality, working for the startup Leap Motion (now Ultraleap) from 2016 until 2018.
In 2018, Murati joined OpenAI as a researcher and quickly rose through the ranks to become its Chief Technology Officer. In this role, she has led groundbreaking work on projects such as ChatGPT, Dall-E, Codex, and Sora, while also overseeing the organization's research, product, and safety teams. Her contributions have been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of machine learning and the responsible and ethical development of AI technologies.
On November 17, 2023, Murati briefly served as the interim Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI following the unexpected departure of Sam Altman. She returned to her role as CTO after Emmett Shear was appointed CEO, and Altman was reinstated shortly thereafter.
