Peter Welinder is an experienced technology professional and the current VP of Product & Partnerships at OpenAI. He has worked for several notable companies, including Dropbox and CodiumAI, and has founded multiple startups.
Welinder received his BSc in Theoretical Physics from Imperial College London, which he attended from 2004 to 2007. He then pursued a Ph.D. in Computation and Neural Systems at Caltech from 2007 to 2012.
Welinder currently oversees OpenAI's product and commercialization efforts, including the popular ChatGPT. Prior to joining OpenAI, he held various positions at Dropbox, including Head of Machine Learning and Software Engineer Tech Lead. He was also an engineering lead at Dropbox, where he led the photos infrastructure, computer vision, and machine learning teams.
Welinder has a strong background in machine learning and artificial intelligence. He co-founded and served as CEO of Anchovi Labs, an AI startup that was acquired by Dropbox in 2012. Additionally, he has worked as a Technical Advisor for Basis Set Ventures, evaluating and advising early-stage companies.
At OpenAI, Welinder was a founding member of the Robotics research effort, where he helped train a robot hand to solve a Rubik's Cube. He has also been involved in the development of GPT3 and Codex API, shaping the future of AI.
Welinder has made several personal investments, including in Sutro Software and GoodOnes. He has also served as a Technical Advisor for Basis Set Ventures and held board and advisor roles in multiple organizations.
