Ruben Weitzman

Ruben Weitzman is a PhD candidate in Computational Biology at the University of Oxford. He is part of the Applied and Theoretical Machine Learning Group in the Computer Science Department, under the co-supervision of Yarin Gal and Debora Marks. Weitzman's research interests lie in the application of machine learning to computational biology, particularly protein language models for generative protein design.

Education and Employment

Weitzman completed a foundation year in Mathematics and Computer Science at Dauphine University in Paris. He then moved to the UK and obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London. During his time at Imperial, he developed an interest in pluri-disciplinary approaches to healthcare and gained experience in bioinformatics as an Amgen Scholar.

Following his bachelor's degree, Weitzman pursued a Master of Philosophy in Computational Biology at the University of Cambridge. His master's thesis, supervised by Dr. Bianca Dumitrascu, was titled "Multimodal single-cell prediction using DPCCA". During his time at Cambridge, he also completed an 8-week research internship in Andrea Brand's lab at the Gurdon Institute, where he analysed single-cell brain data and performed RNA interference experiments on Drosophila.

Weitzman is currently a PhD student at the University of Oxford, funded by an EPSRC and Kellogg Scholarship. His PhD thesis focuses on machine learning applications in the healthcare sector, specifically in bio-chemistry and bioinformatics problems.
