Septimiu (Tim) E. Salcudean is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia UBC. His research focuses on developing haptic human-computer interfaces that convey the forces of touch, with applications in medical robotics and image-guided interventions.
Salcudean received his Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and Master of Engineering (MEng) from McGill University and his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of California, Berkeley, all in electrical engineering.
From 1986 to 1989, he was a Research Staff Member in the robotics group at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. He then joined the University of British Columbia, where he holds the Laszlo Chair in Biomedical Engineering and a Canada Research Chair.
In 1996, Salcudean held a Killam Research Fellowship and spent a year at ONERA in Toulouse, France. In 2005, he was on a sabbatical visit at CNRS/TIMG/GMCAO in Grenoble, with Dr. Jocelyne Troccaz.
Salcudean's research interests include medical robotics, image-guided interventions, medical image analysis, including cancer classification, ultrasound, elastography, and teleoperation.
He has published extensively in these areas, with notable publications including:
Salcudean has been actively involved in the Haptics Symposium and the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications. He has also held editorial positions with IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation and served on the program committee of the MICCAI Conference.
He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of MICCAI, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
