Shean Wang is a researcher in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, with a focus on natural language processing (NLP) and healthcare applications. He currently serves as the vice chair of research and assistant professor in the Department of Health Information Management.
Wang obtained his PhD and is now a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA). Before joining his current institution, he was an assistant professor in the Department of AI & Informatics at the Mayo Clinic.
Wang's research interests centre on AI, NLP, and machine/deep learning methodologies, with a particular emphasis on their applications in healthcare. His goal is to utilise data-driven computational approaches and leverage different dimensions of data to meet the needs of various stakeholders in the healthcare industry, including clinicians, researchers, patients, and customers.
He has led multiple NIH-funded projects, focusing on developing NLP and AI algorithms to automatically extract information from free-text electronic health records (EHRs) such as clinical notes, radiology reports, and pathology reports. In these projects, he proposed novel NLP methodologies to enhance information retrieval (IR) and information extraction (IE) from clinical notes, applying these approaches to various disease areas like depression, pediatric asthma, Alzheimer's disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and fractures.
Wang has over 60 peer-reviewed publications to his name and has served as Principal Investigator (PI) on multiple awards, including an Amazon AWS Diagnostic Development Initiative (DDI) Award. He actively contributes to the informatics and NLP communities, having served as a Student Paper Competition Committee for the AMIA Annual Symposium and an associate editor for the MedInfo conference. He is also a regular reviewer for prestigious journals such as Nature Communications, Bioinformatics, and IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE).
