Overview

Suzanne E Mazzeo is a researcher and professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her research interests include eating disorders and obesity, with a focus on understanding cultural and environmental factors that influence the expression of genetic predispositions to eating problems. Mazzeo aims to develop and evaluate culturally sensitive interventions to promote healthy eating and exercise behaviours, particularly in community settings.

Education

Mazzeo received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2000.

Notable Works

** Relation of BMI and weight suppression to eating pathology in undergraduates** (2018): This study examined the interaction between weight suppression (WS) and current Body Mass Index (BMI) on body dissatisfaction and eating pathology in undergraduate men and women. Results suggested that WS is related to eating disorders in non-clinical samples.
** BMI and Disordered Eating in Black College Women: The Potential Mediating Role of Body Appreciation and Moderating Role of Ethnic Identity** (2021): This study explored the relationship between body image and obesity among Black American women, finding that body appreciation and ethnic identity play a role in mediating and moderating disordered eating behaviours.
** [ [What Will People Say?]]: Mental Health Stigmatization as a Barrier to Eating Disorder Treatment-Seeking for South Asian American Women**: This study used focus groups to identify cultural barriers and facilitators to seeking treatment for eating disorders among South Asian American women. It found that social stigma and mental health stigmatisation were significant barriers, and recommended clinician partnerships with South Asian communities to address these issues.
** Cultural adaptation of an integrated eating disorders prevention and healthy weight management program** (2023): This study interviewed women in focus groups to investigate the influence of race, ethnicity, and culture on appearance ideals, finding that Black and Latina women often do not view thinness as their ideal body shape.
** [ [The role of parents in behavioral treatment for adolescent obesity: design and rationale for the TEENS+ randomized clinical trial]** (2023): This paper presents the design and rationale for the TEENS+ clinical trial, which aims to determine the optimal role of parents in adolescent obesity treatment.
