Yang Zhang Person

Yang Zhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at UCLA, where he directs the Human-Centered Computing and Intelligent Sensing Lab (HiLab). His research focuses on enhancing ambient computing devices with perceptual and interaction capabilities, contributing to advancements in the Internet-of-Things, personal informatics, and assistive and autonomous technologies.

Biography

Zhang received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, advised by Prof. Dong Wang. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the School of Information Sciences (iSchool), University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), and as the W. J. Cody Research Associate at Argonne National Laboratory.

Zhang has received numerous awards and honours, including the Best Paper Award at ACM/IEEE ASONAM, the Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant Award from the University of Notre Dame, and the Data Science Scholar Fellowship from Indiana University. He was also selected as the 2022 Thomson Reuters/Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher.

One of Zhang's main research focuses is on developing computational methods to predict the 3-dimensional structure of protein molecules and deducing their biological functions. He also works on combining computational algorithms and biochemistry experiments to design new protein molecules with enhanced functionality.
